Exploring the unknown, inspiring the future

Dr. Eduard De La Cruz Burelo is a professor in the Department of Physics at Cinvestav, where his work in experimental particle physics has positioned him at the forefront of some of the most significant scientific collaborations of our time. His involvement in landmark experiments, such as the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland and Belle II at Japan’s SuperKEKB accelerator, has deepened our understanding of particle interactions and the fundamental structure of the universe.

A distinctive aspect of Dr. De La Cruz Burelo’s career is his expertise in applying advanced machine learning and statistical techniques. These tools, increasingly vital in fields where large-scale data analysis is critical, have allowed him to refine pattern-recognition methods to identify potential new particles and physics beyond the Standard Model of Particles. His contributions in this area have been instrumental in several key discoveries, including the landmark identification of the Higgs boson. This background positions him not only as a leading figure in experimental physics but also as an early adopter of data-driven methodologies that are now essential across various scientific and technological domains.

Beyond his direct contributions to particle physics, Dr. De La Cruz Burelo has shown a deep commitment to understanding the broader societal impacts of science. His research extends to interdisciplinary areas, including flood risk analysis, the effectiveness of STEM programs in higher education, and the socioeconomic evaluation of scientific infrastructure investments. His involvement in these diverse fields reflects a thoughtful approach to the intersections between science, technology, and society, helping to shape policies and strategies that benefit the broader community.

Throughout his career, Dr. De La Cruz Burelo has also played a central role in leadership within the scientific community. As principal investigator on numerous research projects and evaluator of major scientific proposals, his contributions have extended beyond his own research to guiding broader scientific efforts. His past roles as President of the Division of Particles and Fields of the Mexican Physical Society, General Coordinator of the High Energy Physics Network of CONACYT, and Coordinator of the Scientific and Technological Development Program for Society, among others, reflect his enduring impact on both the scientific infrastructure and its integration with societal needs. Now serving as the Head of the Physics Department at Cinvestav, he continues to influence the direction of research and the development of future generations of scientists.
